Enigma

Enigma

Sprung Advance Plus presented Enigma at the Physical Fellowship 2023 at the Belgrade Theatre, Coventtry. The piece was devised with the group to explore the festival’s theme Freedom.

On June 7, 1954, Alan Turing, a British mathematician, acknowledged as one the most innovative and powerful thinkers of the 20th century — sometimes called the inventor of modern computing — died as a criminal, having been convicted under Victorian laws as a homosexual and forced to endure chemical castration.

Sprung Advance Plus started the creation of Enigma exploring the life of Alan Turing understanding that Britain didn’t take its first steps towards decriminalizing homosexuality until 1967. But their biggest questions were around how much have things changed since that ‘ground breaking’ change of law?

Enigma looks at our freedom to really be who we are and the sometimes-difficult challenges we all face in accepting our true identities. Set in a crazy world of escape rooms, Enigma reveals how perhaps when we are most lost we can find ourselves.

A few words from Sprung Advance Plus members about making Enigma:

“Sprung youth is an incredible environment to explore and discuss issues that affect our lives as young people in a safe and nonjudgmental space.”

“A whole lot. Sprung youth gives us the space to be whoever we want to be… and to make an actual difference, say an actual message… no matter what the outside world says to us”

“Everyone is so welcoming and accepting and we all help and boost each other.” “It means that I can be myself and I’m allowed to experience life as I want to. It’s so nice to be able to feel that way with such an amazing group of people”

“Being a part of Sprung Youth means being a part of a team! The ensemble and community is what makes Sprung what it is. During the making of Enigma we talked a lot about finding your community, finding your tribe and that’s what Sprung is for me.”

“The power of teamwork allowed us to battle any challenges we faced as a group.”

“It is always such a delight to create a show with other young people and Enigma has been no different. I am proud to be part of this show that uses our own words and experiences. Creating Enigma has been so rewarding.”

Sprung Advance Plus members thoughts on the importance of the Physical Fellowship theme of freedom:

“The theme of freedom has allowed us to express what we need to. Sprung in itself is a free space so we made sure that our performance was all about young people finding their own version of freedom.”

“Freedom, to me, means the ability to express yourself without judgement of others.”
