Your Leaders
Emily: Emily is Highly Sprung’s Senior Associate Artist, having worked with the company for eight years. As Highly Sprung’s main performer, Emily is an experienced aerialist and a celebrated dancer and choreographer. Her approach to storytelling through physicality is rooted in her love for patterns, choreography, and gesture. She is dedicated to creating an inclusive and supportive workshop environment that champions the individual physicality and creativity of each young person. Working with Emily will leave young people empowered to use their bodies as expressive tools in their own work
Stefania: Stefania is an Associate Artist and Performer at Highly Sprung. Originally from Southern Italy, she has worked with the company since 2021 taking part in multiple productions as a dancer, performer and aerialist. Stefania has also joined the Highly Sprung Team in many educational projects working with students and young people from age 5-19, learning about physical theatre and creating performance work. Having a background in dance and movement, Stefania uses her strong physicality and passion for dynamic movement and everyday emotions to tell stories in the Highly Sprung way. Stefania champions diversity, inclusivity and mutual respect, making sure that each individual in the group feels seen. She encourages young people to explore and give voice to their creativity beyond the ‘right or wrong’ box. Stefania wishes that every young person she works with leaves the room feeling empowered, taking away new discoveries and learning, and with a big smile on their face because they’ve had fun!

What you will do
Sessions are always practical and very active, requiring high levels of energy and participation throughout.
All sessions start with a group game to welcome young people into the space.
Question of the week is an important part of the session, which brings young people’s voice, thoughts and opinions into the room and is a good way of saying hello to everyone.
Game is a key part of every session. With high energy movement games which allow young people to get physically warmed up as well as developing collaborative skills. Games are followed by skill building activities, which might include relays to build movement vocabulary or introductory activities to contact work on learning to lift and shift each other through the space.
Often the main part of the session will be spent creating work, developing ideas, in response to a script, story, theme or rehearsing work that was made in previous sessions if there is a sharing or performance event coming up.

What to wear and bring
The work created at the workshops is of a very physical nature. We ask that all participants wear loose fitting trousers/tracksuit bottoms.
We have a strict NO JEANS OR SKIRTS policy.
Young people will work in bare foot (unless prevented for health reasons). These requirements are for your young person’s safety and for the safety of others. Outdoor shoes are not permitted on the dance floor.
During the session there will always be the opportunity to have a drink. We advise that they bring a small bottle or flask with them.
No packed lunches please.
Please do not bring any nut or nut products to the sessions.

The Venue
The Daimler Powerhouse is the former site of car-manufacturer Daimler.
After many years of planning and fundraising, redevelopment of The Daimler Powerhouse began in June 2020 with support from Coventry City of Culture 2021.
The building provides dedicated space for artists to create and for resident creative companies to deliver innovative programmes of education and training for children and young people.
The re-developed Daimler Powerhouse is a place where people come together to collaborate, to make new work and where new and exciting ideas can be realised.
Daimler has been home to Sprung Youth for many years and is an accessible, welcoming and safe space in which you can be your most creative self. All our sessions take place in the large upstairs movement space, which is accessible by both stairs or by lift.
