Sprungsters Re-Launch

Sprungsters Re-Launch
By Sarah
3rd September 2020

We are excited to share with you our plans for re-opening Sprungsters in the Autumn term, but not only that…Whilst we have been locked away, we have been busily working on a new approach and identity for our Sprungsters groups. Something that reflects the full range and breadth of the work we do and the brilliant young people we work with. Earlier this year, we sent out survey.  A big thank you for all of you who took part.  Thanks to your input we have been able to develop our plans with your feedback and experience in mind, which has been an essential part of our considerations.

A really important part of developing this new identity was in recognising the Sprung journey, acknowledging the many young people who have taken part in that journey from the start at age 4 all the way through to leaving us to pursue their own creative journey at age 19. We wanted a better way to connect the stages of that journey that celebrated each step along the way, so that every participating young person can see how they are connected to each other.

We have also had to take into account the impact of COVID-19 and the importance of finding sustainable ways to provide safe and long-term solutions to running our activities. It was so wonderful to welcome young people back to face-to-face working during our Summer Comeback and we were able to test new safe working practices to take forward into the next term. Our main considerations have been reducing group sizes and finding safe spaces where we have control over the COVID security of our working practices. To see more and arrange a free taster session, visit the Sprung page here.

So… What’s new?

New Groupings

In an effort to recognise the unique needs of young people at every level of Sprungs and to maintain safe working practices, we have divided our groups into four stages. Each stage has its own identity and provides creative development that is age appropriate and distinctly designed to inspire and engage young people to achieve their potential.

We also hope that it is much clearer for young people to identify where they are on their Sprung journey and what the next steps might look like, helping them grow into confident, creative and happy young people.

Sprung Lets (Year R – 2): An introduction to the Sprungsters journey; rooted in play, storytelling and inspiring imagination. Each session brings children into a space where they can explore their creativity, learn new skills through physical theatre and movement, make friends and build confidence.

Sprung Stars (Year 3 – 5): The second step in the Sprungsters journey. Through game and creative tasks, children are encouraged to begin their own storytelling and take ownership over their movement ideas. Exploring dynamic movement, independent creative thinking and building the confidence to express ideas.

Sprung Launch (Year 6 – 9): Developing skills in physical theatre, contemporary theatre and dance, 11-13 provides fresh new insights into drama and devised performance where participants learn skills to enable them to make their own work.

Sprung Advance (13+) :  Working to a professional standard on projects in site-specific work, festival and studio settings. At least one full-scale performance each year including the headlined performance at The Physical Fellowship.

New Times (for some!)

In order to keep group sizes low and minimise levels of contact our timetable of classes has had to change. We very much hope that you can understand our reasoning behind this choice and that the new timings, although very different for some will still work for you.

Sprung Lets (Year R – 2): Saturdays 10am-11.30am

An introduction to the Sprungsters journey; rooted in play, storytelling and inspiring imagination. Each session brings children into a space where they can explore their creativity, learn new skills through physical theatre and movement, make friends and build confidence.

Sprung Stars (Year 3 – 5): Fridays 5pm-6.30pm

The second step in the Sprungsters journey. Through game and creative tasks, children are encouraged to begin their own storytelling and take ownership over their movement ideas. Exploring dynamic movement, independent creative thinking and building the confidence to express ideas.

Sprung Launch (Year 6 – 9): Fridays 6.30pm-8.30pm

Developing skills in physical theatre, contemporary theatre and dance, 11-13 provides fresh new insights into drama and devised performance where participants learn skills to enable them to make their own work.

New Space (for some!)

We have also made the decision to move all our groups into one space.  We are very excited to be one of the lucky companies who have been invited to be resident in Coventry’s new creation centre- The Daimler Power House (https://www.businessinnovationmag.co.uk/former-world-famous-coventry-car-factory-to-be-turned-into-2m-creative-hub/) Sprungs will be one of the first groups to be moved into the new space in June, before its official opening in July 2021.

In the meantime we would like to bring all our groups together in our current temporary space, managed by Imagineer, at Temple Workshops. We have been resident at Temple workshops since April last year and have found it to be a safe and creative space to make work, our older groups have been working here with us since Spring 2019.

Being in one building, managed by a resident company, has also meant that we have had authority to put in place safe working practices and hygiene policies to allow work to recommence following the COVID-19 outbreak. We feel more confident knowing we are working together in a space which respects and listens to our needs where working with young people is concerned.

More information to follow on how to find us in the new term!

Community Commitment

Thanks to our Sponsor a Sprungster campaign we have been able to make a commitment to ensuring Sprung is more inclusive and representative. This piece of work will focus on looking at recruitment and how young people from all backgrounds feel welcome and supported to take part in our sessions. One aspect of this work will be running short-term Sprung groups in primary schools across the city. This will introduce more young people to Sprung and make an easier transition for them if they choose to pursue their interest further and join Sprung on a termly basis.

Fees

We know how hard recent months have been and that recovery will not be a quick process. We have therefore made the decision to freeze our fees for the Autumn term. However, we have also decided to move to termly delivery rather than running in exclusive 10-week blocks, so fees for the full term may look higher but you are in fact getting more sessions.
