20 years on: Highly Sprung’s return to Smithswood Academy

Just over twenty years ago, when Highly Sprung was still in its infancy, we had one of the most important phone calls of our careers: a researcher from Warwick University was in desperate need of a company or artist to join them in delivering 2 weeks of workshops in a Birmingham school. You can only imagine our excitement when we were recently asked to return to the same school where it all started.

Sprung Advance: Behind the Scenes of Changing Climates

Today we have a guest blog from Fern, a brilliant member of our oldest youth group Sprung Advance. Fern was a key part of the cast for Winter Rites at last week's Changing Climates Festival. She gives a behind the scenes look at the process of creating and performing this show, from the early days when we were back in lockdown to a powerful opening night.

After a year in lockdown, we’ve been reflecting on our Highly Sprung highlights, featuring dancing lecture Transmission: Gone Viral, new touring production Castaway and much more!
Highly Sprung are delighted to announce that we have been awarded a grant from the government’s Culture Recovery Fund. We are incredibly grateful to receive this support and are committed to truly developing our work through the fund, investing in programmes that will have long-lasting impacts for the communities and audiences we work for.
Arty's Broken Heart engages children through physical theatre that inspires a sense of marvel, challenging existing barriers to accessing and participating in cultural activity. We are hugely excited about this development, as an opportunity to reach more children and to inspire teachers to lead their own activity on heart health using the resources our boxset provides.
Castaway challenges our 'Throwaway Society' and aims to inspire audiences to consider their role within the climate crisis.' It will be coming to Coventry in August 2021 and Spring 2022, in partnership with the Canal and River Trust. Listen below to a conversation between Sarah Worth and Rachel New at the BBC.
We are excited to share with you our plans for re-opening Sprungsters, but not only that… Whilst we have been locked away, we have been busily working on a new approach and identity for our Sprungsters groups. Something that reflects the full range and breadth of the work we do and the brilliant, unique young people we work with.
